We trace where the buried wire actually runs. That map is worth having even if nothing else changes today.

We read continuity and signal strength around the full loop, then flag breaks, weak sections, and degraded splices.

Bench-test the transmitter
We check output strength, alarm behavior, and signs of surge damage, which is the most common failure point we see.

We look at contact points, strap condition, and battery health, then watch how each collar responds at the live boundary.

The boundary wire usually survives
Quality boundary wire protected underground routinely outlasts the equipment attached to it. If the loop tests intact, it stays. You don't pay to re-trench a yard that doesn't need it.
The electronics are the weak point
Electronics age, and power surges from summer storms are a common cause of transmitter failure. A modern unit can often drive the loop you already have.
Receiver collars are consumables
Straps, contact points, and batteries wear with daily use. We can usually replace or upgrade a receiver on its own, without touching the rest of the system.

Newer receiver collars
A current receiver collar can usually replace an aging one on the loop you already have, on a battery that lasts about two years. Straps, contacts, and seals wear out long before buried wire does.
Modern transmitters
Newer transmitters have clearer diagnostics, finer boundary-width control, and an audible wire-break alarm, so you hear about a problem before your dog finds it.

Virginia thunderstorm season is hard on transmitters. Dedicated surge protection is one of the cheapest upgrades we install and one of the most likely to pay for itself.

Most of the upgrade calls we take are for systems another company put in the ground. Where compatibility allows, we diagnose, repair, and upgrade equipment from the brands below. DogWatch® is included, and it is also the brand we install ourselves. Compatibility varies by brand and generation, so we’ll tell you plainly what mixes with what, and when a proprietary part locks you into the original dealer.

When upgrading makes sense
- The buried loop tests intact and the layout still fits how you use the yard.
- One component failed, usually the transmitter, while the rest of the system works.
- Collars are aging but the wire and transmitter are healthy.
- You want newer receiver collars or surge protection on an otherwise solid system.
When replacement is the better call
- The wire is brittle or broken in multiple places, and locating each break costs more than a new loop.
- The boundary no longer matches the property (a pool, an addition, a moved fence line).
- The system uses proprietary parts we can’t source or safely mix with modern equipment.
- The upgrade quote approaches new-install territory. Complete installations start at $1,399, so you deserve that comparison in writing.
Either way, you get both numbers side by side before deciding. If something is actively broken right now, start with dog fence repair or wire-break repair.

Can you repair an existing Invisible Fence® system?
Yes. We diagnose and repair systems from Invisible Fence®, Dog Guard®, DogWatch®, Pet Stop®, PetSafe®, SportDOG® and others, regardless of who installed them. Wire breaks, transmitter faults, and collar issues are all common, fixable problems.
What happens during a power outage?
The boundary is inactive while power is out, so treat the yard like an unfenced yard until it's restored. We'll explain backup options and what to watch for when power returns.
