Underground Fence vs. GPS Collar
DogWatch® vs. Halo® GPS collars.

The everyday differences
What living with each system involves.
This compares the DogWatch equipment and service Superior installs with Halo’s current published collar features. Check the exact collar, membership, and written terms before buying.
| Compare | ||
|---|---|---|
| Boundary | Buried wire follows the route planned for your yard; does not use GPS positioning | Virtual boundaries saved in the app; uses GPS/GNSS positioning |
| Setup | Dave plans and installs the boundary in Richmond and Central Virginia | You create and edit boundaries in the app; no perimeter wire to bury |
| Collar battery | Replaceable battery lasting about 2 years; confirm the receiver’s schedule | Rechargeable; Halo advertises up to 48 hours and recommends charging nightly |
| Required subscription | None for our installed systems | An active Pack Membership is required to keep the collar active |
| Training | First session with Dave, then daily practice using the materials provided | Owner-led training program with lessons and support |
| Follow-up help | Free in-person training help for the first year after installation | Manufacturer support, including live online support |
| Taking it elsewhere | The installed wire stays at your property | Portable boundaries you can set up at other locations; introduce your dog to each boundary |
| Location tracking | Buried-wire containment without live GPS location tracking | Live location tracking; updates need Wi-Fi or cellular coverage |
| Warranty | DogWatch equipment terms; Superior’s installation service coverage is 30 days | 12-month collar warranty, with exclusions; separate protection options available |
Start with your property
Where will your dog use the boundary?
A permanent boundary at home.
With DogWatch, the wire defines the route. Trees and buildings do not change that route through GPS positioning. Dave can plan around your driveway, garden, and the areas you want your dog to use.
Installation takes work, and a cut wire needs repair. If you move, a new property needs its own boundary installation.
Boundaries that travel with you.
Halo may suit you if portability, app-based boundary changes, and location tracking matter most. There is no wire to trench or cut, and you can create boundaries at more than one property.
Allow for charging, membership costs, and training at each location. Follow Halo’s placement guidelines and check suitability near roads, buildings, and tree cover before relying on a GPS boundary.

Compare the routine as well as the purchase price.
Batteries and charging
Superior’s installed collars use replaceable batteries rather than a nightly charging routine. With Halo, plan when to remove and recharge the collar, and how your dog will be contained while it is off.
Costs over time
Compare installation or collar purchase, additional dogs, batteries, membership, and service. Superior’s installed systems have no required subscription. Halo requires an active plan; check current pricing for the membership you choose.
Learning the boundary
Dave runs the first session with you, and you continue the practice. If you need training help within the first year, he returns at no charge. Halo’s owner-led program also needs practice; buying either system does not replace training.
