A hound works a scent line, and a scent line does not stop where the deed does. On acreage with a wooded edge there is nothing marking where the yard ends, so a dog that has caught something is already moving before anyone has noticed. The ask on a property like this is almost never a fence around two acres of woodland. It is for the dog to keep the run of the land and still know where the edge is.

A perimeter loop set back from the road and kept inside the treeline, so the boundary sits somewhere a dog can still be called back from rather than at the point they are already gone. Through the wooded sections the wire follows the ground and the natural crossing points instead of a surveyor's straight line, because that is where a dog actually leaves.

Flags first, on a lead, at a low setting. The collar is adjustable by the owner, so training starts gentle and the level only comes up if a particular dog needs it, which is why size and temperament rarely decide whether a dog can be trained to a boundary. A scent hound gets extra sessions on the downwind edge, because that is the side where the distraction lives.
