As the weather warms up and the flowers start to bloom, many of us look forward to longer days outside with our furry friends. , we believe a safe, happy dog makes for a happy owner. Here’s how to make sure your pet enjoys spring while staying healthy and secure.

           1. Watch Out for Seasonal Allergies

Just like people, dogs can suffer from seasonal allergies. Pollen, mold, and grass can trigger symptoms such as:

            Excessive scratching or licking

            Watery eyes and sneezing

Red, inflamed skin or ear infections

           What you can do:

Wipe your dog’s paws and coat after time outside to remove pollen.

Keep bedding and favorite resting spots clean by washing them frequently.

Talk to your vet about allergy medications or supplements if symptoms worsen.

Spring means your lawn and garden are coming back to life—but some plants and chemicals can be dangerous for dogs.

Safety tips:

Store all chemicals out of reach and follow pet-safe application guidelines.

Remove any toxic plants or place barriers around them.

Check your yard for sharp sticks, loose trash, or other debris that popped up over winter.

           3. Ensure Your Dog Stays Secure in the Yard

With more time outside, it’s essential that your dog has a safe space to play. If your pet containment system wasn’t used much over the winter, spring is the perfect time for a quick check-up.

Test your underground fence to ensure it’s working properly.

Inspect the collar battery and replace or recharge it if needed.

Walk the boundary with your dog as a refresher on training and flags.

When considering the installation of an underground dog fence, homeowners often weigh the options between a do-it-yourself (DIY) approach and hiring professionals. Each method has its advantages and challenges, particularly in terms of cost, time, and effort. Let’s explore these factors to help you make an informed decision.

: Opting for a DIY underground dog fence can be more budget-friendly upfront. Basic kits are available for less than $100, with some systems covering up to 1/3 of an acre and expandable to 25 acres. However, it’s essential to account for additional expenses such as tools, extra wire for larger areas, and potential maintenance costs.

: Professionally installed systems typically range from $1,500 to $2,600, depending on the size of the area and specific requirements. While the initial investment is higher, this cost often includes high-quality equipment, expert installation, and comprehensive training for your pet.

: Installing the system yourself can take approximately 6 to 8 hours, depending on the property’s size and terrain. This process involves planning the layout, burying wires, setting up the transmitter, and training your dog to understand the boundaries. It’s a hands-on project that requires a certain level of technical skill and physical effort.

One of the most significant advantages of Superior Dog Fence over Invisible Fence Brand™ is their use of rechargeable collars.
In-Ground Dog Fence vs. GPS Technology

Why a underground dog fence is better than a GPS system.

Why an Underground Dog Fence is Better Than a GPS System

When it comes to keeping your furry friend safe and contained within your property, the choice of containment system is crucial. Two popular options are underground dog fences and GPS-based containment systems. While both have their merits, underground dog fences offer several advantages that make them a superior choice for many pet owners. Here’s why an underground dog fence might be the best option for your dog.

           1. Reliability and Consistency

Underground dog fences are known for their reliability. These systems use buried wires to create a physical boundary that is consistently recognized by the dog’s collar. Once installed, the fence works continuously without the risk of signal loss, which can be an issue with GPS systems.

GPS signals can be disrupted by various factors such as dense tree cover, tall buildings, or even heavy cloud cover. This inconsistency can lead to your dog receiving mixed signals, potentially confusing them and leading to a breach in the containment area.

           2. Precise Boundaries

Underground dog fences provide clear, precise boundaries. The wires are installed exactly where you want the boundary to be, ensuring that your dog understands the limits of their roaming area. This precision is harder to achieve with GPS systems, which can have a margin of error of several feet.

For dogs, this inaccuracy can be the difference between staying safely in the yard and wandering onto a busy street. The exactness of an underground fence’s boundaries makes training more straightforward and effective.

           3. No Interference Issues

Electronic interference is a significant concern with GPS systems. Devices like cell phones, Wi-Fi routers, and other electronics can disrupt the GPS signal, causing the system to fail. Underground dog fences are hardwired and thus immune to such interference, ensuring that the system works flawlessly at all times.

           4. Lower Maintenance Requirements

Once an underground dog fence is installed, it requires very little maintenance. The system is mostly underground, protected from weather and external damage. In contrast, GPS systems rely on electronic components that are exposed to the elements, requiring more frequent maintenance and updates.

Batteries in GPS collars also need regular replacement or recharging, adding another layer of maintenance. The buried wires and weatherproof components of an underground fence are more durable and less likely to need frequent attention.

           5. Cost-Effectiveness

Although the initial installation of an underground dog fence might seem costly, it often turns out to be more economical in the long run. GPS systems can have ongoing costs such as subscription fees for the GPS service, and the need for regular battery replacements or recharges adds up over time.

Underground dog fences, once installed, have minimal additional costs. The durability and low maintenance requirements mean fewer expenses over the lifespan of the system.

           6. Better Training and Adaptation

Dogs adapt more quickly to underground fences because the boundary is stable and unchanging. The consistent boundary helps dogs learn and remember where they can and cannot go. Training is generally faster and more effective with an underground fence compared to a GPS system, where boundary inconsistencies can confuse and stress your dog.

           7. Aesthetically Pleasing

One of the less obvious but important benefits of an underground dog fence is that it doesn’t obstruct your view or alter the appearance of your yard. There are no visible wires or hardware, allowing you to maintain the aesthetics of your outdoor space. This can be especially important in neighborhoods with strict homeowner association rules or for those who take pride in their landscaping.

           Conclusion

While GPS dog containment systems offer some flexibility and modern features, the reliability, precision, and low maintenance of underground dog fences make them a better choice for many pet owners. The consistent boundaries, cost-effectiveness, and minimal maintenance requirements of underground fences provide peace of mind and ensure your dog’s safety and well-being. When it comes to protecting your furry friend, the tried-and-true underground dog fence stands out as a superior solution.

Help your dog beat the heat this summer with these tips.

Essential Tips for Keeping Your Furry Friend Cool

As temperatures rise, our furry friends can struggle with the heat just as much as we do. Dogs are particularly vulnerable to overheating because they don't sweat like humans. Instead, they rely on panting and releasing heat through their paws and noses to cool down. To ensure your dog stays comfortable and safe during the hot summer months, here are some essential tips to help them beat the heat.

           1. Provide Plenty of Fresh Water:

Hydration is crucial for your dog in the heat. Make sure your dog has access to fresh, clean water at all times. Consider multiple water stations both indoors and outdoors, and if you're on the go, bring a portable water dish. Adding ice cubes to the water can also provide extra cooling.

           2. Create Cool Retreats:

Dogs need a cool, shady place to relax when it's hot. Indoors, ensure that your home is cool enough for your pet, and if air conditioning isn't available, use fans to help circulate the air. Outdoors, provide access to shaded areas where your dog can rest, away from direct sunlight.

           3. Mind the Time:

Avoid walking your dog during the hottest parts of the day—typically from 10 AM to 4 PM. Early morning or late evening walks are best when the sun is less intense. Always test the pavement with your hand before heading out; if it's too hot for your hand, it's too hot for your dog's paws.

           4. Invest in Cooling Gear:

There are various cooling products available for dogs, such as cooling vests, mats, and bandanas. These products can be soaked in water and help keep your dog cool through evaporation.

           5. Keep Exercise Light:

During extremely hot days, limit exercise to gentle walks and play sessions. Avoid strenuous exercise to prevent overheating. You can also opt for indoor activities, like interactive toys or training sessions, to keep your dog mentally and physically stimulated without the added heat risk.

           6. Never Leave Your Dog in a Car:

Even with the windows down, a parked car can become a furnace in minutes and can lead to fatal heatstroke. Always leave your dog at home in a cool environment if you have errands to run that require you to leave them unattended.

           7. Watch for Signs of Heatstroke:

Know the signs of heatstroke, which include excessive panting, drooling, reddened gums, vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, and uncoordinated movement. If you suspect your dog is suffering from heatstroke, move them to a cooler area immediately, apply cool (not cold) water to help lower their temperature, and contact your veterinarian right away.

           Conclusion:

Summer can be a fun time for you and your dog to enjoy the outdoors, but it's important to take precautions to prevent overheating. By following these tips, you can help ensure that your dog enjoys the warmer weather safely. Always keep an eye on your pet during hot weather, and adjust your routines as necessary to keep them cool and comfortable. Remember, if it feels too hot for you, it's probably too hot for your dog, too.

Ensuring a Safe and Merry Christmas for Your Furry Friend

The holiday season is a time of joy, festivities, and togetherness, and for many of us, that includes our beloved four-legged family members. As we decorate our homes, prepare delicious meals, and exchange gifts, it's crucial to keep in mind the safety and well-being of our furry friends. In this blog post, we'll explore some essential tips on how to keep your dog safe and happy during the Christmas season.

           Festive Decorations-

Decking the halls with boughs of holly and twinkling lights is a cherished tradition, but it's important to be mindful of the potential hazards decorations can pose to your dog. Secure Christmas trees to prevent them from toppling over, and avoid using glass ornaments that can break easily. Tinsel and ribbons may look enticing to your pup, but they can cause serious health issues if ingested. Keep these decorations out of your dog's reach to ensure a hazard-free environment.

           Safe Spaces-

Hosting gatherings with family and friends is a common occurrence during the holidays. While some dogs thrive on social interactions, others may find the hustle and bustle overwhelming. Create a designated safe space for your dog—a quiet room or a cozy corner with their bed and toys. This provides them with a retreat where they can relax and recharge if the festivities become too much for them.

           Mindful Feasting-

The holiday season is synonymous with delicious feasts, but it's essential to be cautious about what your dog consumes. Many festive foods, such as chocolate, nuts, grapes, onions, and certain spices, can be toxic to dogs. Remind your guests not to share their plates with your furry friend, and keep all treats out of their reach. Consider preparing special dog-friendly treats to include them in the holiday celebration safely.

           Gift Giving-

As you exchange presents with your loved ones, be mindful of the wrapping paper, ribbons, and bows. These items can be tempting for dogs to chew on or ingest, leading to digestive issues or, in extreme cases, an obstruction. Dispose of gift wrap materials promptly, and keep gifts in a secure area until it's time to open them to avoid any unintended accidents.

           Outdoor Adventures-

If you live in a snowy region, winter walks and playtime can be an enjoyable part of the holiday season. However, be cautious of ice-melting products, which can be harmful to your dog's paws. After outdoor activities, wipe your dog's feet to remove any salt or chemicals. Additionally, keep an eye on your dog in snowy conditions to ensure they don't get lost or wander into unsafe areas.

           Conclusion-

By incorporating these safety tips into your holiday festivities, you can ensure a joyful and hazard-free Christmas for both you and your furry friend. Remember, the key is to strike a balance between celebrating the season and keeping your dog's well-being a top priority. Wishing you and your canine companion a happy and safe holiday season!

Introducing your dog to the dog fence system gradually is key to their successful adjustment. We call this Gentle Approach Training. We Start by allowing your dog to explore the boundary while wearing their receiver collar. Use positive reinforcement, such as treats and praise, to create a positive association with the boundary. Over time, your dog will understand their limits and respect the boundaries set by the dog fence system.

           Consistent Training and Reinforcement:

Consistency is crucial when training your dog to respect the boundaries of the dog fence system. Spend time every day reinforcing the training by walking your dog along the perimeter, providing gentle corrections when necessary. Remember to reward your dog for staying within the safe zone and avoiding attempts to roam beyond the boundaries. With patience and consistent training, your dog will learn to associate the boundary with safety and security.

           Regular Maintenance and Check-ups:

To ensure the effectiveness of your superior dog fence system, it's essential to perform regular maintenance and check-ups. Inspect the boundary lines, transmitter, and receiver collar for any signs of wear or malfunction. Keep the collar's batteries charged. Regular maintenance will help you catch any issues early on and maintain a secure environment for your dog.

           Conclusion:

Keeping your dog from roaming and ensuring their safety is of utmost importance for any responsible pet owner. With a superior dog fence system, you can provide a secure environment for your furry friend to roam freely within the boundaries you set. By choosing the right system, installing it properly, introducing your dog to the system gradually, and providing consistent training and reinforcement, you can successfully prevent your dog from wandering off and give yourself peace of mind.

Remember, a well-maintained and reliable dog fence system, combined with love, care, and positive training, will create a safe haven for your dog within the confines of your property. So, invest in a superior dog fence system today and give your beloved companion the freedom to explore while keeping them safe and sound.

As responsible pet owners, ensuring the safety and well-being of our beloved dogs is of paramount importance. One of the biggest concerns for dog owners is keeping their furry friends safely contained within their property. While traditional fences can be effective, they may not always be feasible or aesthetically pleasing. This is where invisible dog fence systems come into play. In this blog post, we will explore the efficiency of underground dog fence systems and how they can keep your dog safely within the boundaries of your yard.

           Understanding Underground Dog Fence Systems:

An underground dog fence system is a modern solution designed to keep your dog within a specific area without the need for visible physical barriers. The system consists of three primary components: an underground wire, a transmitter, and a receiver collar worn by the dog.

           How It Works:

Underground Wire: A flexible wire is buried around the perimeter of the designated area, creating an invisible boundary. This wire is connected to a transmitter, which is typically placed in a garage or an outdoor sheltered area.

Transmitter: The transmitter is the control center of the system. It sends a radio signal through the underground wire, creating a boundary. It also allows you to adjust the range and intensity of the signal, providing a customizable solution for different yard sizes and dog breeds.

Receiver Collar: The dog wears a lightweight receiver collar that detects the signal emitted by the underground wire. When the dog approaches the boundary, the collar emits a warning sound, vibration, or mild static correction, alerting the dog to retreat.

           Training and Adaptation:

The effectiveness of an invisible dog fence system lies in proper training and familiarization. It is crucial to introduce your dog to the system gradually, ensuring they understand the boundaries and associate them with the warning signals or corrections. This process typically involves training sessions with positive reinforcement techniques, allowing the dog to learn and adapt to the system at their own pace. Our Gentle Approach training along with our Superior Dog Fence system allows you to adjust the settings when you need to, meeting your dogs needs as they get used to the new boundary. Our Blunt Stimulating technology allows your dog to learn quickly, and safely compared to "Shock" stimulating systems.

Benefits of an Underground Dog Fence System:

Safety: Underground dog fence systems provide a secure containment solution while allowing your dog to roam freely within the defined boundaries. They help protect your pet from potential dangers outside, such as busy roads or neighboring properties.

Aesthetics: Unlike visible physical fences, underground dog fence systems are invisible, maintaining the natural look of your property. This can be especially beneficial for those living in communities with strict aesthetic guidelines or for homeowners who prefer an unobstructed view of their surroundings.

Customization: These systems offer adjustable settings, allowing you to tailor the boundaries and intensity levels to suit your dog's size, temperament, and breed-specific needs. This adaptability ensures a personalized and effective solution for your furry friend.

Cost-Effective: Compared to traditional fences, underground dog fence systems are often more cost-effective, especially for larger properties. They require less maintenance and eliminate the need for repairs or replacements due to wear and tear.

Flexibility: Underground dog fence systems can be easily installed on various types of terrain, including hilly landscapes or properties with irregular shapes. This flexibility makes them suitable for a wide range of environments.

           Limitations and Considerations:

While underground dog fence systems offer numerous advantages, it's important to consider their limitations. These include:

They may not be suitable for dogs with certain health conditions or behavior issues.

Some dogs may become anxious or stressed by the corrective stimuli, requiring extra patience and training.

External factors like power outages or wire damage can temporarily disrupt the system's effectiveness.

Daily exercise is essential for both your dog’s physical and mental health. Depending on where you live, getting in enough exercise each day can be difficult during the colder winter months. Inclement weather and dropping temperatures may force you and your furry friend to stay inside, but that doesn’t mean they can’t get a good workout for their body and brain.

An outdoor walk is always the ideal option, but if you absolutely cannot safely go outside with your dog, here are a few of our favorite tips for exercising indoors. It is important to maintain control over the situation during indoor activities and avoid long play sessions, which may create unhealthy obsessions for your dog. These indoor activities should only be used when outdoor exercise is truly not an option and should not become a regular part of your routine.

           Stair Runs

If you have a set of stairs in your home, running up and down them is a great way to tire out your dog. Stairs use different muscles than a regular walk, making it extra challenging. Start at the top of the stairs and throw a toy down for them to get your dog engaged. Call their name and have them bring the toy back to the top of the stairs. Repeat until your dog is tired and ready for a break.

           Create an Obstacle Course

Using items you already have around your house, create a fun obstacle course to lead your dog through. This could include hula hoops, tunnels, tables, chairs, or other objects you can lead your dog around and under. After mapping the route, use a treat or other reward to lead your dog through the challenges. They will enjoy both the mental and physical challenge of navigating the course you’ve set up.

           Search and Rescue (Treat Style)

Using your dog’s favorite treats, place them in hiding spots around your house that your dog will be able to sniff out and access. Then, let them go at it. By sniffing around the house for the treats, your dog will become both mentally and physically exhausted. You can also purchase dog treat puzzles to create a similar experience. Fill them with treats, and then watch your dog work to open all the compartments and find them. Afterward, your dog will be exhausted and satisfied.

           Fetch or Chase

A simple game of fetch or chase with a favorite toy can be a great way to get in some exercise. Adding in commands can help keep your dog mentally engaged as they physically tire themselves out.

           Tug of War

Tug of war can be a great way to get some exercise for your dog as it works very different muscles than any of the other ideas on this list. However, dog parents should be aware of some risks associated with tug of war and keep an eye out for them. Always make sure you’re using a toy that is appropriate for tug of war and doesn’t shred easily or cause damage to your dog’s mouth or teeth. Also, make sure you have a good power dynamic with your dog before attempting tug of war. If you do not have a good idea of your dog’s strength and instincts, tug of war can get dangerous when let out of hand.

           Use a Treadmill

A treadmill can be a great way to get your dog some exercise indoors when used safely. It is essential to always do so with supervision and your dog’s safety in mind. Let your dog get comfortable with the treadmill, and then start them off at the lowest speed. Use treats to keep them on the treadmill and slowly increase the speed as they get better at walking on it. Never tie your dog to the treadmill, as this can be extremely dangerous.

           Visit a Pet-Friendly Store

If driving is an option, hop in the car with your dog and head to a pet-friendly store for some fun socialization. Try pet stores, hardware stores, or other pet-friendly stores for a fun adventure sniffing up and down the aisles and exploring a new place.

Heartworms are parasitic worms transmitted between animals via mosquitoes that can be fatal if not properly treated. Heartworms live in your dog’s heart and arteries and travel through the bloodstream to harm vital organs. Once infected, one dog can have several hundred heartworms residing in them for up to seven years.

Common signs of heartworm to look out for include coughing, vomiting, weight loss, fatigue, and labored breathing. If you notice any of these signs, take your dog to your vet immediately for a blood test and treatment.

You can easily prevent heartworm with a chewable pill or topical medication available through your vet. These are inexpensive and keep your dog safe from heartworms. Additionally, dogs should be regularly tested for heartworms via their yearly blood work.

Kennel cough encompasses a few different respiratory infections that are highly contagious and can be passed directly from dog to dog through the air or on shared objects. The mix of viral and bacterial infections causes inflammation of the windpipe and voice box, similar to a chest cold.

Common symptoms of kennel cough include a dry cough (usually accompanied by a “honking” sound), gagging, fever, and nasal drip. Kennel cough can clear up on its own, but you should consult your veterinarian on the best course of treatment. Always isolate your dog from other dogs immediately if you think they may have kennel cough.

Kennel cough can be prevented through vaccines available at your vet. We also recommend avoiding exposure when possible. Many dog daycares and kennels will not allow dogs that have not been recently vaccinated for kennel cough.

           Ringworm

Ringworm in dogs is caused by a fungus on the skin, hair, and nails and is easily contagious. It can spread to other dogs and humans by touching the infected areas.

Common symptoms of ringworm include crust bald spots on the skin and skin lesions, although in some cases, dogs may not show any signs at all and still be carrying the fungus. If you suspect your dog may have been exposed to ringworm, see your vet as soon as possible to avoid further exposure to other dogs or humans.

Your vet will use ultraviolet light or culture to diagnose whether it is ringworm. They may prescribe shampoo, ointment, or oral medications for treatment if it is.

           Rabies

Rabies is caused by a virus and can infect all mammals, including humans. It can be transmitted via a bite from an infected animal, and once infected, rabies is almost always fatal. Dogs often contract rabies from a wild animal or an outdoor, unvaccinated dog or cat.

Symptoms of rabies may take up to eight weeks and include changes in behavior, biting, snapping, attacking things, irritation at the bite locations, fever, hiding, foaming at the mouth, loss of appetite, paralysis of the throat, jaw, or hind legs, or seizures. There is currently no treatment for rabies once symptoms appear, resulting in death.

Rabies can be prevented through vaccination, which is required by law in many areas. It is also essential to prevent your dog from interacting with wild animals and always supervise them when playing outdoors.

           Parvovirus

Parvovirus is a highly contagious virus that attacks white blood cells and can cause lifelong cardiac issues when infected at a young age. The virus can damage the heart muscles and be potentially life-threatening, especially in young dogs. It is very contagious and can live on the surface of objects for months at a time.

Common symptoms of parvovirus are vomiting, lethargy, loss of appetite, and bloody diarrhea. Medication is currently unavailable to treat parvovirus, and infected dogs usually need to stay at a hospital for intensive treatments for up to a week.

Parvovirus can be prevented via a vaccine. If you experience an infection in your home, thorough cleaning and disinfecting of all surfaces and objects is necessary to prevent reinfection.

Introducing your baby and pet can be the first step to a lifelong friendship, but it can also be a bit stressful for everyone involved. As parents, you want to keep both your baby and pet safe. Your pet is likely overwhelmed by the new smells and objects that accompany your baby. And your baby is just trying to figure out how this whole world works as they interact with it.

When you bring a new baby or pet into your home, many things change in your life. Luckily, there are a few things you can do to make sure that introductions go as smoothly as possible.

           Create a Training Plan

While this is not exclusive to introducing your pet to a new baby, it is essential to create a training plan to ensure they have basic obedience skills. Establishing basic commands such as sit, stay, come, drop it, and settle will be extremely helpful when you have a baby around and need your dog to listen to you. It can also be beneficial to get your pet comfortable with new sounds, smells, and environments that may accompany the baby and reward them to create positive associations.

           Prepare for Lifestyle Changes

If you already have a pet in your home, bringing home a new baby will create the need for lifestyle and routine adjustments, which may cause some anxiety for your pet. If possible, minimize the stress your pet experiences by preparing for these changes ahead of time. This could mean slowly adjusting your dog to a less regular feeding schedule or hiring a dog walker to help your dog get used to other people helping you out. If your dog is used to time at the dog park, look into doggy daycares where you can drop them off and do some trial sessions before the baby comes.

While it can be tempting to give your pet lots of extra attention in the weeks leading up to the baby, this can actually make it more difficult for your pet to adjust after the birth. Instead, try giving your pet short cuddle or play sessions at random times of the day so they don’t get attached to a particular schedule.

           Prepare for Baby

When your baby is young, they will not know the best way to interact with your pet, so it is important to prepare your pet for more aggressive handling. Babies may grab ears, poke, or prod, so it can be helpful to get your pet used to this kind of handling and provide them rewards for positive reinforcement.

           First Impressions

The first time your baby and pet meet can set the tone for their relationship. You want to help make their first interactions as enjoyable as possible. The first time they meet, let your pet greet the rest of the family as usual, and then put them on a leash and have treats ready. Calmly introduce the baby to your dog and reward them to create positive reinforcement. Have a helper distract your dog with commands or toys, so their attention isn’t fully focused on the baby. Provide praise and rewards for calm interactions with the bay.

           Finding a Routine

Once your baby and pet have established a positive relationship, it can be helpful to find a routine for your family that involves both pet and baby. If you are taking your pet or baby on a walk, bring the other along. Teach your pet to enjoy quiet time with the baby by providing them with a bed or comfy spot in the room where you feed your baby. Most importantly, always reward calm, polite behavior from your pet while they are around the baby.

           Teaching Respect for Pets

As your baby grows, start to teach them to respect your pet and appropriately interact with them. Provide examples of how to best communicate and play with your pet as they develop their own relationship with them. Teach them what kind handling and pets look like and that hitting, pinching, riding, etc., is not ok. It can also be helpful to teach them structured types of play like fetch or tug and get them involved in training by teaching them commands that your pet knows.

A problem many dog owners face is begging for food. It can happen in the kitchen, at the table, or anywhere your dog detects a tasty morsel they desire. Oftentimes, this results in your dog putting their paws up onto the counter or table to try to grab a bite. Or maybe they are the type to scrounge around in the trash after a meal, looking for leftovers. We want to stop all of these behaviors as soon as you notice they start to happen, so they don’t become acceptable habits.

           Stop Begging at the Table

One of the most common places we see dogs beg for food is at the dinner table or wherever you eat your meals. Physically, you are often lower to the ground and more accessible to your dog. They can smell the tasty meal you are eating and want some for themselves. Many dog owners have been swayed by those puppy dog eyes and discreetly slipped their best friend a scrap of something delicious. However, establishing this precedence will only increase the amount of begging at the table as your dog discovers it’s working.

Our best advice to stop begging at the table is not to let it start in the first place. Do not let your dog think that the table is a place where they will receive food. Create boundaries around your dining table or eating space, either with commands or indoor invisible fencing solutions. This can help in situations where you have guests over or small children who do not understand the importance of avoiding feeding your dog from the table.

           Stop Jumping on the Counter

To prevent your dog from jumping on your kitchen counter in an attempt to beg for food you are preparing or have laid out, you can decide between two different approaches. The first is to keep your dog out of the kitchen altogether. If you find there are just too many cooks in the kitchen, making this space off-limits for your dog may be the best option. This not only takes away the opportunity for begging at the counter but also keeps your dog out from under your feet as you are moving around with hot and sharp objects.

If you don’t mind your dog being in the kitchen, training your dog with an “off” command is essential. This command should let them know they need to remove their paws from whatever surface they have jumped upon and return to the floor. Reward calm behaviors and consider offering your dog a place to settle in the kitchen if they enjoy being near you while you’re cooking.

           Stop Digging in the Trash

Just as crucial as preventing your dog from begging for food before and after your meal is keeping an eye on the scraps that end up in the trash afterward. Make sure that wherever you dispose of food after your meal is not accessible to your dog, as many human foods can be dangerous or deadly to our dogs. Your kitchen trash should be protected within a cabinet, or boundaries should be put in place using commands or an invisible fencing solution. No pet owner wants to end up at the emergency vet after a relaxing meal because their dog got a hold of dangerous chicken bones from the trash.

One of the most common questions new and experienced pet owners alike often find themselves asking is how to get their dog to stop peeing inside the house. This can be a frustrating problem that is not exclusive to new puppies. Indoor accidents can happen at any age for a variety of reasons, so it is important to understand the potential causes of peeing inside the house and ways to help avoid it. Once a dog begins peeing in the house, or marking certain areas, it can be a very difficult habit to break, so it is important to stay on top of this and house train your dog as soon as possible.

What can cause accidents in the house?

To best determine how to stop accidents from happening in the house, it’s first important to understand why they are happening. There are a variety of reasons a dog may pee in the house, depending on its age and circumstances.

If your dog is currently a puppy or at the early stages of house training, occasional accidents are normal as your dog learns where it can and cannot go potty. If you’re experiencing a lot of accidents while potty training, your dog probably just isn’t clear on what the rules are yet. When teaching your dog where it’s appropriate to potty, remember to give them clear boundaries with lots of potty breaks, and most importantly, be patient.

If your dog is older or has already been fully housetrained and suddenly starts having accidents in the house, something is likely going on. Peeing inside the house could be your dog’s way of letting you know that they are not feeling well or are having some other issues. Accidents in older dogs are also a sign of urinary tract infections, kidney disease, or diabetes. If you think this may be the case, it is important to talk to your vet as soon as possible to identify what is going on and find a solution.

Provide your dog with regular potty breaks.

One way to help avoid accidents inside the house is to make sure that you are giving your dog regular potty breaks outside. The length of time your dog can go between potty breaks can vary based on your dog and its age. While some crate-trained dogs may be able to hold it for 10-12 hours, new puppies often need to go out every hour or two. So, make sure you consider your pet’s individual needs when deciding how often to take them out.

If your house training your dog and they are having accidents, increase the frequency with which you take them out, so they have more opportunities to go in their potty area. You could also consider installing an electronic pet door so that they can go outside to go potty as they need to.

Reduce access to common accident areas.

Sometimes having one accident inside will leave a smell that helps reinforce the idea that this is a good place to go potty for your dog. This is called marking and can be difficult to stop once it starts. If your dog has picked a common spot inside that they like to have accidents, reduce their access to that area so they don’t have the urge. This can be done with physical barriers or an invisible fencing option.

Once you have restricted access to the indoor area, continue to provide positive reinforcement when they go potty outside and try to keep taking them to the same area. Like it did inside, the smell will help reinforce that this is a good place to go potty and help them learn faster.

If you live in a cold or wet climate, you know that it can sometimes be challenging to keep your dog safe as temperatures drop. If you have a yard that gets even the occasional bout of snow or ice, there are a few things you can do to make sure it is more pet-friendly this winter season. Check out some of our top tips for making your outside space safe and fun for your furry friend below.

Ensure Your Yard Is Safe and Secure

During any season, but especially winter, it is important that you make sure your yard is safe and secure so your pet is not able to escape. During the winter, it is much more dangerous for a dog to escape their yard due to the cold weather. They are also much more likely to get lost after leaving their home because it can be difficult to follow scent trails in the snow or ice.

In addition to the normal distractions, if your pet is outside during harsh weather such as wind, ice, or hail, it may scare them and cause them to try to escape. This can be one of the scariest times to lose your pet, as it may be difficult for you to get outside to search for them. Visibility will also likely be low, reducing the chance of spotting them from afar.

Avoid the stress of a potential escape during winter weather by installing a perimeter boundary for your dog. This can be a traditional fence, installed properly so they cannot dig under it or get over it. You may also consider an invisible fence to help train them of where their boundaries are. Whatever you choose, make sure your dog is kept inside your yard no matter what happens this winter.

Remove or Protect Any Potential Pet Hazards

Once your yard is secured, you want to make sure that there are no potential hazards that could harm your pet. Potential hazards could include toxic plants, frozen ponds, or anything else that could cause your pet bodily harm if they get into it.

In order to keep your pet safe, consider removing these hazards if they are easy to transport, like a potted plant. For more permanent features, like a pond or landscape feature, you can use an invisible containment system to keep your pet away from it. Invisible fence systems can be installed around any areas that you want to make sure your pet cannot access, for their safety or the safety of your yard.

           Provide Easy Access to Shelter

Many dogs can go outside during colder temperatures, with some breeds thoroughly enjoying it. However, this is extremely breed-dependent, so it is important to understand the needs of your dog. If you normally leave your dog outside for long periods of time during the summer, you need to keep an eye on the temperature during the winter and make adjustments as they drop. If a dog is outside for long periods of time in cold weather, it can lead to frostbite, hypothermia, or worse. This is especially true for smaller, short-haired dogs.

If you do plan to leave your dog outside during the colder months, it is essential that they have access to shelter from cold weather and potential inclement weather. This could be an insulated doghouse where they can stay warm and dry, but better yet, consider installing a pet door. This will allow your dog to come inside on their own when it gets too cold for them. Many newer dog doors are programmable to make sure that only the pet you intend to be using it is able to. This keeps other pets safe from getting outside and your house safe from other animals getting inside.

Automatic pet feeders can be a lifesaver for busy pet parents during the holiday season, or any time of the year. It is important to keep your pet’s feeding schedule consistent to keep them healthy, but it can be difficult to maintain it between work, family, and all of the extra holiday events. An automatic pet feeder will allow you to schedule your pet’s meal ahead of time so that they eat their meals exactly when they should, regardless of whether you’re home or not. Many automatic timed pet feeders come with removable dishwasher-safe pieces for easy cleaning and the ability to set multiple feeding times or portions.

Interactive toys that you can fill with treats have been becoming increasingly popular lately and you can now find them in many shapes and sizes, perfect for pets of all types. These toys make great gifts as they can keep a dog or cat entertained for hours while they work to access the treats, providing ample time for owners to get things done or entertain for the holidays. When looking for interactive treat toys, make sure you find one that is durable and size-appropriate for the pet and treats you plan to use it with. If you’re looking for a budget-friendly but highly engaging pet gift, this is the choice for you.

A pet door can be a great addition to any home, especially during the winter as owners may want to avoid the cold weather. The problem with old school pet doors is that they can easily flap open in the wind, letting cold air into your house, and you have no control over when your pet (or which pets) can access the door. An automatic safety pet door is the solution to these problems. These high-tech pet doors allow you to set access schedules and can integrate with a chip in your pet’s collar. This means that the door will only open when you want it to and for the pets you want to be able to go out. No more accidentally letting the cat out! You can also schedule times for the door to be accessible or not, for example, to prevent your dog from going outside in the middle of the night.

Say goodbye to boring old water bowls and hello to pet drinking fountains. These high-tech fountains include filters to make sure your pets’ drinking water is always clean. If your pet enjoys running water, many fountains come with the ability to constantly bubble or create a small fountain. Most also easily come apart for cleaning and may even have dishwasher-safe parts. Fountains come in a variety of sizes, colors, and price points, making them a great gift option for pet parents of all kinds.

An automatic, self-cleaning litter box can be a lifesaver for pet parents around the holiday or any especially hectic time. No one wants to smell the litter box during the middle of a holiday celebration, and automatic litter boxes will make sure that never happens. These litter boxes self-clean after each use, scooping waste into an odor-controlled compartment so that your house always smells fresh and clean. Plus, your pet will always enjoy a clean litter box when doing their business. This is a gift that everyone in your family will truly love.

It’s that time of year again. We start thinking about our goals, what we want to accomplish, and decide what our New Year’s resolutions will be. Many of us may try to start a new hobby, lose a few pounds, or spend more time with loved ones. One area of their life people often forget is their pet. Your pet is a member of your family, just like your partner or children, so remember to include them in your New Year’s resolutions.

If you want to set a New Year’s resolution this year to spend more quality time with your pet and give them the best quality of life, here are a few of our tips for how to integrate them into your resolution planning:

           Get More Involved in Playtime

A great idea for a resolution is to commit to being more involved with playtime with your pet. Over time, pet owners may get lazy and expect their pet to find their own ways to have fun. But playing an active role in playtime means increased bonding with your pet and more physical activity for you. It’s a win-win!

Use Them as An Ice Breaker

If you’re trying to get more social this year, your pet can act as a great ice breaker anytime you have a new group of people over. Letting your dog or cat meet your guests is a great way to get to know them a bit better and start up conversations. Just make sure you’re aware of any pet allergies for your guests before letting them loose.

           Get Your Kids Involved

There are tons of benefits from having your kids get more involved in the care of your pet this year. Studies show that children who grow up in a home with an animal are around 50% less likely to develop allergies. They also likely have stronger immune systems and a lower risk for asthma. Not only will spending time with your pets keep your kids healthier, but it will also help them develop responsibility and empathy as they learn to care for another being.

           Reap The Benefits of Relaxation

If you’re trying to relax a bit this year after a stressful period, your pet can be a huge help in this goal. Spending time with your dog, cat, or other cuddly friend causes your brain to release oxytocin, also known as the “cuddle chemical.” Oxytocin can help decrease levels of cortisol which causes stress. Something as simple as petting your dog can give you a boost of oxytocin and help chill you out a bit. What a great excuse for a snuggle session!

           Make New Friends

As an adult, it can be hard to meet new people and make new friends. If you’re trying to increase your social connections this year, let your pet help! Letting your dog tag along on errands, regular trips to the dog park, and other fun outings can be a great way to meet people with similar interests.

           Have Some Fun

It is so easy to get caught up in the drive to be productive and get things done, but when we look back at our life, the moments of fun and happiness are what truly stand out. Having more fun is one of the best New Year’s resolutions you can set, and your pet can become your number one partner in crime. Even if you’re working hard, make sure to take breaks for a game of fetch or some fun with feathers with your furry friend. The joy it brings you will stick with you for years to come.

           Keep Everyone Healthy

At the end of the day, we all want to take care of ourselves and make sure we can enjoy life to the fullest. Not only do our pets keep us active and help us maintain our physical health, but the lifetime partnership a pet brings can provide a sense of purpose and meaning that can improve mental health and self-esteem. The benefits a pet can bring to your life are truly astounding.

As we decorate for the holidays and us humans enjoy special treats, it’s important to keep the safety of your pets in mind as you introduce new scents, tastes, and décor into your home. Many pets will be very interested in any new items you bring into your home and may quickly get into presents, holiday spreads, and leftovers. In order to keep your pets safe and healthy, you need to know what is safe for your pets and what types of things should be kept at a distance.

           Know Your Decorations

Decorations can add a sense of festivity and warmth to your home around the holiday season. Many of us choose to add touches of décor throughout our home to truly deck the halls. If you have pets, we recommend avoiding decorating with holiday plants that are poisonous to animals such as live holly or poinsettias.

Here is an extensive list of plants that are poisonous to dogs.

There are many alternative options to these toxic plants to help keep your pet safe, such as using fake holly or poinsettias or carefully placing them in a location that is out of the reach of your pets.

Other décor that may attract your pets could be tinsel, ribbons, or other shiny objects. These are attractive to pets and may be fun to play with but can cause intentional blockage or other issues if swallowed. Make sure these types of items are out of reach of your pets and as you are opening gifts, be sure to clean up ribbons and small pieces of wrapping as you go. Vacuuming regularly during the holiday season can prevent pets from consuming small pieces of tinsel or pine needles that may have fallen to the ground over time.

This can help train them where they are allowed to go and make sure you still get to enjoy your Christmas tree or winter village display. Some invisible fence systems even let you set different boundaries for different pets, giving you complete control over your home and peace of mind.

Many foods that we humans eat can be unsafe or potentially deadly for pets, so it is extremely important for pet owners to know which ones are safe for them to consume. As you introduce new foods into your home for your holiday celebrations, be sure to do your research on each of them. Many foods commonly used during the holidays like chocolate, onions, and grapes can be extremely unsafe for dogs and other pets. It can also be very dangerous to feed your pets animal meat or fish if it has bones in it as they may choke or become lodged in their intestines. Avoid a trip to the vet (or worse) by not feeding your pet table scraps around the holidays.

If you are having guests over for the holidays, it can be helpful to set some ground rules to avoid any issues. Let them know that it is not safe to share food with your pets and to keep an eye out for pets getting into any food that has been left out on tables and counters. Be sure garbage cans are covered if they are left out for easy access.

Keep in mind the precautions and reminders above and you will be able to enjoy the holiday season with family and friends of all species.

Fall is the perfect season for outdoor activities, family gatherings, and holiday celebrations. Whether you prefer baking delicious treats, tailgating for the big game, or enjoying the beautiful changing leaves, there are tons of ways to include your favorite furry friend in on the fun. As man’s best friend, your dog will love to be a part of your annual festive activities and get-togethers, as long as you always keep their safety in mind. Check out some of our favorite ways to have fun with your pet this fall season.

           Go For a Hike

No matter where you live, fall is a beautiful season as nature transitions from the heat of summer to the cooler winter months. Find a dog-friendly hiking trail using a trail finding app or website and then hit the road with your furry best friend. Both of you will benefit from some fresh air and the adventure of exploring a new area.

Before heading out, make sure you know the rules of the trail, including whether your dog needs to be on a leash, and know if you should be prepared for other off-leash dogs. Also, always keep an eye on your dog to make sure they don’t try to eat potentially dangerous plants or other found items on the trail that may lead to a vet trip.

Sometimes, you just can’t venture away from the house, but that doesn’t mean the fun should stop. You can have pet playtime right in your own backyard by playing fetch, rolling in the leaves with your dog, or teaching your pup some new tricks. Make sure your yard is protected with adequate fencing such as an

Another way to get outside during fall with your pet is to have a pet-safe picnic. Research some seasonal pet-friendly snacks and then head out to a park or even set up in your own backyard. Rake a pile of leaves for your dog to run through and jump into or set up a fun obstacle course to coach them through with treats. Maybe even invite some other doggy friends to make it a real party! As always, keep an eye on potentially dangerous plants or objects to make sure your pet does not ingest these while you’re enjoying your picnic.

Fall is a popular time to make some tasty treats, especially baked goods that make us feel extra cozy as the weather starts to change. Many of the traditional fall flavors and foods are perfect to use to make special autumn-inspired treats for your pets. Try integrating fall favorites like pumpkin, squash, and apples into your dog’s meals or treats for some extra flavor and fun. You can even make homemade dog treats using canned pumpkin to help improve your dog’s digestion. Just search Google for ‘homemade fall dog treats’ and you will find loads of options. Many of the traditional fall activities we enjoy year after year can also be enjoyed by our favorite furry friends. If you’re planning a trip to the apple orchard, pumpkin patch, or other festive activities, call ahead and find out if your pet can accompany you. They’ll have a ball exploring the new sights and smells while you get to enjoy the crisp fall weather.

Fall is the perfect time to get outside and spend some extra time exploring with your pet. Before heading out, always do your research on pet safety and keep an eye on your pet at all times as they are exploring new spaces. Making sure they are safe will make sure you both are able to enjoy the fall season and all it has to offer.

Getting a underground dog fence installed by a professional can be pretty expensive depending on the route you go. This blog is to help you make the right decision, whether you choose Superior Dog Fence to protect your dog in Richmond, Virginia, or anywhere else for that matter. Here are 6 things that make up your price.

           1) Are You Hiring Someone Local, or a Dealership?

Depending if you go with one of those big brands, or a local small business can be the reason you spend $1,300 or $2,300 on your professionally installed dog fence. A Dealership has a ton of overhead, guys, trucks, brick and mortar store, etc. You local pet fence installer will always be your better choice. Here at Superior Dog Fence we give out the owners personal cell phone which he encourages people to call/text day or night with any questions or concerns. Some dealers are only open 4 hours a day, very inconvenient when you realize your dogs collar batter just died.

           2) What Type of Equipment Are You Getting?

Our industry has a ton of options for a ton of different needs customers may have. Do you just want a simple collar and transmitter? Do you want a collar that’s rechargeable and a transmitter that has all the bells and whistles? Its important that a professional help you in choosing a good lightweight, rechargeable collar with a transmitter you don’t need to replace in 3 years. Here at Superior Dog Fence our customers love the Petsafe’s YardMax System. This is a All-In-One system that comes with a rechargeable collar, and allows you to have devices to keep your dog away from areas inside (upstairs, trash can, kitty litter, furniture), and specific areas outside (front or back porch, gate to pool, flower bed). This system is compatible to Invisible Fences Boundaries Plus, but saves you over $1,500 (invisible fence does not have a rechargeable collar).

           3) Are You Putting the Wire in the Woods?

Where you want the layout of the perimeter wire will effect the cost of your underground dog fence. When your installation professional arrives, this is the best time to put the wire where you want, especially going with a local professional. Usually working with someone local your already saving thousands of dollars. The biggest reason though is local professionals usually work as a One-And-Done, meaning unless you did some major landscaping you will not need to call that professional back out. You can change collar settings, and transmitter setting all on your own, other franchise companies will require you to contact them and set up an appointment for any collar changes requiring a trip and labor charge.

           4) How Does the Company Give you a Quote?

Most franchise dealerships still send someone out to your home to give you a quote. Not only is this time consuming, but puts you in a awkward situation. Who wants the pressure of someone coming to your house and selling you something? This costs that company a ton of money, paying that sales person, paying for the truck and gas to see you, etc. Also this is very inconvenient for you. You would have to wait 1-2 weeks for someone to come out and sell you a product, then 1-2 weeks for the installer to come out. At Superior Dog Fence we use modern technology to see your property online, which tells us how much wire is needed, and to outline the desired layout you requested. This is very important, because it saves you hundreds of dollars, and saves you a ton of time.

           5) What Type of Layout do you Need?

Most dog fence professionals will suggest installing wire around your entire property. This ensures your dog is protected when in the front and back yard. Some people want their dog when they are in the back to not be able to get into the front, and vise versa. Also some people only want the front or back done, which sometimes can be tricky. Say you only want your dog to be in the back yard, you do need the wire to go around the front and hug the house in order to complete the circuit. At Superior Dog Fence we have the technology that other franchise dealerships do not have due to their product restrictions. We have the strongest transmitter in the market that allows us to use the waterline under your soil to complete the circuit. Now this would be enough information for another article, so please contact us if you feel you need this. This type of system is perfect for our customers who have townhomes.

           6) How far Are You?

Franchise companies have contacts they have to obey by.. So they can only go so far, the farther you are, the more they have to charge. Sometimes this charge is a “hidden fee” shown up on the contract. At Superior Dog Fence we are locally and family owned right here in Richmond, Hampton Roads, and Virginia Beach. Being local, and not a franchise, we do not have contracts with our customers, or dealership contracts that restrict us from going where we want. This also allows us to not have “hidden fees.” When you get a quote from us, the price you see is what you pay, tax included.

           The Bottom Line

Having the support of a local company to make sure you wire is buried as deep as possible is very important for the longevity of your equipment. As pet owners, we want to ensure that we are doing everything necessary to ensure that our furry family members are always kept safe and are well off. One of the biggest complaints that pet owners have is the issue of struggling to safely confine their pets to their yard. Whether it is due to lack of fencing or simply not taking away their dog’s freedom by putting them on a chain/lead or in a kennel, many pet owners have started to question if perhaps an underground dog fence will be the answer to their solutions. But, are they safe?

           How Underground Dog Fences Work

Let’s first examine just how underground dog fences work. Underground dog fences are designed to operate by using a system that transmits an energy source between a set boundary line, a monitoring device in your home (usually in your garage or a wall in your home), and a dog collar that has a receiver attached to it. The “fence” is simply a set of wires that are electrically charged and placed roughly 3” to 4” underneath the soil of the edges of your home’s property.

Your dog can freely roam around your property, but when they begin to get close to the boundary wires, they will be notified by their collar (vibration, tone, or small correction) which will deter them from going any closer. It should be noted that the small correction that notifies them is also completely safe. It is similar to a splash of water on your face, which may feel surprising, but not in any way painful or harmful. You can try it out for yourself by simply holding your dog’s collar and walking across the boundary line!

There are several different dog fences available on the market, so you can be sure that the underground dog fence you are interested in is the best one for your pet’s needs. Overall, the concept is basically the same with regards to how most dog fences work, however, the features and qualities are not.

           The Correction Deterrent Level

For example, the correction deterrent level is one of the biggest things you will want to consider. If you have multiple dogs of various sizes, a strong-willed dog, or a physically strong dog, you are going to need to take into consideration just how many levels of correction deterrent you are going to need. The more options you have, the easier it will be to adjust to the specific and safe level of correction deterrent that you will need.

Another safety feature you will want to look into is a battery backup function option. This is not a standard feature in all underground dog fence systems, but it is a great feature to have so that you don’t have to worry about forgetting to check the batteries on your dog’s collar and having your dog get out of the yard if you do forget.

Underground dog fences genuinely are excellent and very safe options that are available to ensure that you are giving your dog the freedom to safely roam about your yard with the utmost sense of ease and comfort. It is crucial to put forth some adequate research first before deciding which type of dog fence is going to be in your family’s best interest, however. If you have any
